P-glycoprotein (P-gp): Function, Drug Interactions, and Cancer Resistance
P-gp (P-glycoprotein) is a protein found in the cell membrane of many cells in the body, including those in the liver, kidneys, and intestines. It plays a role in transporting various substances, including drugs, out of cells and back into the bloodstream. This can affect the absorption, distribution, and elimination of drugs in the body, and can also contribute to drug resistance in cancer cells. P-gp is also known as ATP-binding cassette transporter B1 (ABCB1).
