Analgesic Potential of Caragana Species: A Review of Existing Evidence and Future Directions
While Caragana species have been traditionally used to treat neuralgia, rheumatic pains, and muscle strains, scientific evidence supporting their analgesic effects is limited. Jin et al. (1994) demonstrated that a methanolic extract of Caragana microphylla (1 and 0.5 g/kg) significantly increased the thermalgesia threshold in Jimpy mice (68–175.8%, P < 0.001) and reduced writhing induced by potassium antimony tartrate (P < 0.01). However, the specific compounds responsible for these effects and the underlying analgesic mechanisms remain unknown. Further research is crucial to identify the active compounds responsible for the analgesic effects and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of action. Additionally, more studies are needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Caragana species in treating pain in humans.
