David Herold: Co-Conspirator in Lincoln's Assassination
David Herold was a co-conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. He was born on June 16, 1842, in Maryland, and grew up in a family of nine children. Herold became involved with John Wilkes Booth, who had planned to kidnap Lincoln, but later changed his plans to assassinate him.
On the night of April 14, 1865, Herold accompanied Booth to Ford's Theatre, where they shot Lincoln. After the assassination, Herold and Booth fled the city and eventually made their way to Virginia. The two men were eventually cornered by Union soldiers, and Herold surrendered while Booth was shot and killed.
Herold was tried and convicted for his role in the assassination plot. He was hanged on July 7, 1865, along with three other co-conspirators.
