David Herold was a co-conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. He was born on June 16, 1842, in Maryland, USA. Herold grew up in a wealthy family and was educated in private schools. He met John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Lincoln, in 1864, and the two became friends.

On April 14, 1865, Booth shot President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Herold helped Booth escape from the city and joined him in a 12-day flight through Maryland and Virginia. They were finally cornered by Union troops in a barn in Virginia, where Booth was shot and killed. Herold surrendered and was later tried and convicted of conspiracy to assassinate the president.

Herold was hanged on July 7, 1865, along with three other co-conspirators. His last words were reportedly, 'I am sorry to have caused so much trouble.'
