Ethnographic Study of Translation Processes: Cognitive Strategies and Social Context

Our study aimed to explore how translators engage with the task of translating, how they make decisions and solve problems, and how they use different tools and resources to support their work. We also sought to understand how the translation process is shaped by the social and cultural context in which it takes place.

To collect data, we conducted observations and interviews with professional translators working in a variety of settings, including in-house translation teams, freelance work, and online platforms. We also collected documents, such as translated texts and communication between translators and clients or project managers.

Our analysis revealed that translation is a complex and dynamic process that involves a range of cognitive processes, such as attention, memory, problem-solving, and decision-making. Translators use various strategies to manage the linguistic and cultural complexities of the task, including consultation with colleagues or experts, use of translation technology, and engagement with the context and purpose of the translation.

Moreover, we found that the translation process is strongly influenced by the social and cultural context in which it takes place. For example, translators working in-house often have more direct contact with clients and project managers, which can affect their decision-making and communication strategies. Freelance translators, on the other hand, need to manage their own time and workloads, which can impact their workflow and stress levels.

Overall, our study highlights the importance of understanding the situated nature of translation and the ways in which it is shaped by the social and cultural context in which it takes place. By taking a closer look at the cognitive processes and strategies used by professional translators, we can gain insight into how they navigate the challenges of the task and ultimately produce high-quality translations.
