Dying to Survive: A Tearjerker Comedy? Seriously?
Hey folks, did you see that movie 'Dying to Survive'? Some people are calling it a masterpiece. Can you believe it? I thought it was just a comedy, but it turned out to be a real tearjerker. It's based on a true story about a guy named Cheng Yong, who used to sell health supplements. But since his business was going down the drain, he took a risky move and started selling generic drugs from India. Now, get this: the Indian generic drug 'Gleevec' is almost identical to the Swiss-made 'Gleevec', which is super expensive. But the Indian version costs only one-fifth of the price! How crazy is that? And do you know why? Because India has this thing called 'compulsory licensing', which lets them bypass patent laws and make affordable drugs for poor people. Meanwhile, families are going bankrupt trying to afford the real deal. But here comes our hero Cheng Yong, or as some people call him, the 'Drug God'. He didn't set out to be a hero, mind you. He just wanted to make some money and keep custody of his kid, and maybe run a successful snake oil business. But then he started helping leukemia patients who couldn't afford the expensive drugs, and he became a whole new person. He even went to jail for it, but he didn't care as long as he could help as many people as possible. It's like that movie 'Schindler's List', you know what I mean? A real redemption story.
