Chengdu's Smog: A Disaster Nobody Seems to Care About

Let me tell you folks, this is the worst thing that's happening in Chengdu. And believe me, I'm not exaggerating.

Sichuan is a basin, and Chengdu is at the bottom of it. There's no good way to control air pollution except by relying on the wind. A few years ago, there was only fog, not smog. These are two different things. Fog is natural, it's water vapor. Smog is pollutants and toxic particles. People can't get rid of smog. We all know who should be doing something about it.

Factories over there are emitting dust and pollutants, it's an ecological disaster. With the arrival of Pengzhou Petrochemical, Chengdu's smog has become devastating. When winter comes, it gets dark early and those polluters will make more exhaust fumes.

For years, the lung cancer incidence rate in Chengdu ranks third in the country, even lower than Hebei. People are doing nothing about it. The government turns a blind eye to it. They even arrested people who gathered to protest against air pollution. Years ago, someone was arrested for sitting quietly on Chunxi Road in this bustling city wearing a mask. Later, people turned a blind eye to the smog. Don't they know that the particles in the smoke are carcinogenic?

Most people here are trying to make a living, ignoring that smog can cause cancer and will spend their life savings. Millions of people may get lung cancer. It won't kill them right away, they don't care. They are still dreaming, still living unscathed. This is a disaster, but it's happening every day.
