Chengdu's Smog Disaster: It's Worse Than You Think, Folks

Let me tell you folks, this is the worst thing happening in Chengdu. And I mean it, not even exaggerating. Sichuan is a basin and Chengdu is at the bottom of it. There's no good way to control air pollution here, just gotta rely on the wind. Few years ago, it was only fog, not smog. These are two different things, folks. Fog is nature's creation, water vapor. Smog is pollution and toxic particles. People can't clear the smog. We all know who should be doing this.

Factories are spewing dust and pollution there, it's an ecological disaster. And with Pengzhou Petrochemical coming in, Chengdu's smog became devastating. Winter comes early and those polluters will create more waste gas.

For years, Chengdu's lung cancer incidence rate ranked third in the country, lower than Hebei. People did nothing. The government turned a blind eye to it. Even arrested people who gathered for air pollution. Years ago, someone was arrested on Chunxi Road for sitting quietly with a face mask. Later, people just ignored the smog. Don't they know the particles in the smoke are carcinogenic?

Most people here are just trying to make a living, ignoring that smog will cause cancer and drain their life savings. Millions of people may get lung cancer. It won't kill them right away, they don't care. Still dreaming, still oblivious, this is a disaster, but it happens every day.
