Lin Zexu (1785-1850) was a Chinese scholar and official who played a prominent role in the early stages of the Opium Wars. He was born in Fuzhou, Fujian province, and was an accomplished scholar who passed the highest level of the imperial examination in 1819.

In 1839, Lin was appointed as the imperial commissioner to Guangdong province, where he was tasked with enforcing the imperial ban on opium. He took a hardline approach to the opium trade, seizing and destroying large quantities of the drug and ordering foreign traders to surrender their stocks. His actions led to the outbreak of the First Opium War, as British traders refused to comply with his demands.

After the war, Lin was exiled to Xinjiang, where he spent the rest of his life. He is remembered today as a national hero in China for his efforts to resist foreign imperialism and protect Chinese sovereignty. His statue stands in several Chinese cities, and he is frequently cited as an example of patriotic and principled leadership.
