When did the bright moon first appear? With wine in hand, I ask the deep blue sky. I do not know what year it is tonight In this celestial palace on high. I long to ride the wind and return home, But fear the jade mansions and lofty towers, so cold and lonesome. I dance and play with my clear shadow, But what use is that while still in this mortal realm below?

Turning around the vermilion pavilion, I see the low-hanging silk curtains, Illuminated by a sleepless light. How could there be any regrets? Why must the round moon be full or wane? People have both joys and sorrows, parting and reunion, The moon has its dark and bright, waxing and waning, This has been so since ancient times, hard to change in any moment.
