Life Expectancy vs. Healthy Lifespan: A Key Difference in Longevity
Hello everyone, today I want to talk about an interesting topic related to health and longevity: life expectancy and healthy lifespan.
Life expectancy refers to the average number of years a person is expected to live based on statistical data. It varies across countries, regions, genders, and socioeconomic groups. For example, according to the World Health Organization, the global life expectancy at birth in 2019 was 73 years, but it ranged from 54 years in Sierra Leone to 84 years in Japan. Life expectancy has been increasing over time due to various factors such as better healthcare, nutrition, sanitation, and education.
However, life expectancy does not necessarily reflect the quality or quantity of healthy years a person can enjoy. That's where the concept of healthy lifespan comes in. Healthy lifespan refers to the number of years a person can expect to live in good health, free from major diseases or disabilities. It takes into account not only the length of life but also the quality of life. Unfortunately, healthy lifespan has not improved as much as life expectancy in many countries. For example, a recent study published in The Lancet found that although life expectancy increased in most countries between 1990 and 2017, the proportion of life spent in good health did not increase in parallel, and in some cases, it even decreased.
Why is that? One reason is that some diseases that used to kill people at younger ages have been replaced by chronic diseases that can last for decades and reduce the quality of life. Another reason is that unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking, sedentary behavior, and unhealthy diets have become more prevalent and can lead to premature aging and chronic diseases.
Therefore, it is important to not only prolong life but also improve the healthspan of individuals and populations. This requires a comprehensive approach that addresses not only medical treatments but also social, economic, and environmental factors that affect health and well-being. By promoting healthy behaviors, preventing diseases, and providing equitable access to healthcare and education, we can help people live longer and better lives. Thank you for listening.
