Multidominance in syntax
Multidominance is a theoretical concept in syntax that proposes that a single syntactic constituent can have more than one dominating node. This means that a single phrase can be simultaneously dominated by two or more distinct nodes, each of which contributes to its meaning and function in different ways.
The idea of multidominance challenges the traditional view of syntax, which assumes that every phrase has a single head or dominating node that determines its syntactic and semantic properties. According to multidominance theory, complex structures can be generated through the interaction of multiple nodes, allowing for greater flexibility and expressiveness in language.
Multidominance has been used to explain a wide range of linguistic phenomena, including the structure of coordinate structures, the formation of complex predicates, and the relationship between syntax and semantics in general. However, some linguists have argued that the concept is not necessary to explain these phenomena and may be overly complex
