Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Overview of Foreign Research Irony and sarcasm are two forms of figurative language widely used in literature and everyday communication. Irony is a rhetorical device that conveys a meaning that is opposite to its literal meaning. It creates a discrepancy between what is expected and what actually happens. Sarcasm, on the other hand, is a form of irony that is intended to ridicule or mock someone or something. These two forms of language are particularly useful in humor, satire, and social commentary.

Studies on irony and sarcasm have been conducted in various fields, including linguistics, psychology, and literature. In linguistics, scholars have investigated the mechanisms of irony and sarcasm, the cognitive processes involved in interpreting them, and their functions in communication. In psychology, researchers have explored the emotional and social effects of irony and sarcasm on individuals and groups. In literature, studies have focused on the use of irony and sarcasm in different genres and periods.

One of the most famous examples of the use of irony and sarcasm in literature is Margaret Mitchell's novel "Gone with the Wind" and its film adaptation "Gone with the Wind". The story is set in the American South during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. The main character, Scarlett O'Hara, is a young woman who is determined to survive and thrive in a world dominated by men and social conventions. Throughout the novel and the film, Mitchell uses irony and sarcasm to comment on the hypocrisy, racism, and sexism of the society depicted in the story.

2.2 Overview of Domestic Research In China, research on irony and sarcasm has mainly focused on their use in language teaching and learning. Scholars have explored the effectiveness of using irony and sarcasm in the classroom to enhance students' language proficiency and critical thinking skills. Some studies have also investigated the cultural differences in the use and interpretation of irony and sarcasm between Chinese and English speakers.

However, little research has been done on the use of irony and sarcasm in literature and its applications in language learning and teaching. This is particularly true for the analysis of irony and sarcasm in classic works of English literature, such as "Gone with the Wind".

2.3 Summary Overall, previous research on the topic of irony and sarcasm has provided valuable insights into the mechanisms, effects, and functions of these two forms of figurative language in communication, psychology, and literature. However, there are still deficiencies in our understanding of the use of irony and sarcasm in classic works of English literature, and their potential applications in language teaching and learning.

In the next chapter, we propose a new research approach that combines literary analysis and language teaching and learning, and apply it to the study of irony and sarcasm in "Gone with the Wind". By doing so, we aim to fill the gap in previous research, and provide a new perspective on the use of irony and sarcasm in literature and language education
