Abstract: Due to the limitations of gastrointestinal reactions or low absorption rates in oral and injection administration, transdermal drug delivery has attracted more and more attention. The rapid development of biomaterials has created more possibilities for transdermal drug delivery. The aim of this study is to establish a framework of various transdermal drug delivery strategies made from biomaterials based on the development of transdermal drug delivery biomaterials. This article mainly introduces emerging biomaterials and transdermal drug delivery systems based on biomaterials, especially microneedle drug delivery. By reviewing relevant papers and marketed products related to biomaterial-based transdermal drug delivery in recent years, we obtained detailed information on different transdermal drug delivery materials and their unique advantages. This helps readers understand the diverse therapeutic options of biomaterial-based transdermal drug delivery systems, their significant advantages over oral and injection administration routes, and insights into the recent development of products in this industry, providing new ideas and strategies for the development and clinical treatment of transdermal drug delivery products. We will introduce the following viewpoints: (1) Introduction of transdermal drug delivery systems; (2) Brief introduction of microneedle concept; (3) Research progress of biomaterial-based transdermal drug delivery strategies; and finally, (4) The potential and challenges of biomaterial-based transdermal drug delivery.
