Insufficient Lime Whitewash Application in Cargo Hold - Potential Risk
During an inspection of a cargo hold, we observed white traces on the bulkhead/plating that resembled a lime coating. This was consistent with the crew's statement that they had applied a lime whitewash to the cargo hold plating/tanktop prior to loading. However, based on our experience, the thickness of this coating appears insufficient. It is important to note that the cargo hold inspection report, conducted prior to loading, did not mention the presence of lime whitewash. This report had already been submitted to the cargo underwriter surveyor before our attendance. The lack of sufficient lime whitewash application raises concerns about the adequacy of cargo protection. Further investigation and corrective action are recommended.
