Cargo Destruction in January - Late Notification from Consignee

The consignee has informed us that the cargo from the container in question was destroyed in January of this year. However, they did not notify us at the time. The consignee stated that they were unsure if the carrier would be held responsible, as the shipper had handled a subsequent cargo claim.
