Wang Jingyu - Master of Science in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) at HKU - Personal Statement

My passion for Mechanical Engineering was ignited during my childhood by my fascination with mechanics, inspired by Sci-Fi movies like Transformers and RoboCop. These films fueled my curiosity and motivated me to explore the inner workings of mechanical models. Through disassembling and reassembling these models, I gained a hands-on understanding of transmission principles and developed a deep appreciation for intricate mechanisms. In high school, I participated in a wooden bridge load-bearing competition, which further expanded my knowledge and appreciation for the inner workings of physical mechanics. This experience allowed me to explore the complexities of load distribution and structural integrity, serving as a catalyst for my desire to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering.

Enrolling at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, known for its excellence as one of the “Double First Class” Initiatives of China, has been instrumental in bolstering my caliber. As a diligent and accomplished scholar with strong time management skills, I devoted energy to organizing the Hundred Regiments Recruitment Campaign and arranging fascinating competitions for my peers in a leadership position at the baseball club, while maintaining excellent academic performance. I was accepted into the University Talent Class and earned the Freshman Scholarship. Throughout my academic journey, I have built a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering through courses such as Mechanical Design, Control Engineering, and Dynamics of Mechanical Vibration. To enhance my ability to apply software in research programs, I have diligently acquired proficiency in various engineering software, including CAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, Edgecam, Maxwell, MATLAB, ROS, and Java. These dedicated efforts over the past three years have expanded my knowledge and technical acumen, enabling me to tackle complex challenges and excel in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

My determination to become a proficient mechanical engineer is fueled by extensive internship experiences and a growing passion for the machinery research industry. By June 2021, I had acquired a strong command of engineering techniques, including lathe operation, milling, wire EDM, and proficient use of fusion-jet 3D printers and light-curing printers through the Manufacturing Engineering Cognitive Practice Program. During my June 2022 internship project at SHENZHEN MULTIFIELD PRECISION CO., LTD., I actively participated in the design and assembly of a prototype device for electromagnetic repulsion control. This involved conducting experimental tests, processing simulation data, and obtaining a function curve that showcased the impact of fitted variables on the magnitude of repulsion between the upper and lower clamping plates. My outstanding contribution and performance in this internship earned me the title of “Outstanding Intern”. The hands-on experience gained as a laboratory tester allowed me to engage in various aspects of the problem-solving process, including problem identification, workpiece solution design, feasibility evaluation, assembly, debugging, analysis, and optimization. This experience not only enhanced my practical abilities but also fostered a scientific mindset. In the first half of 2023, I focused on designing and 3D printing soft robot gripper jaws with specific stiffness. This involved performing finite element simulations and successfully implementing gripping operations. Subsequently, in August 2023, I interned with Wenjun Lu’s research program, which centered around the study of titanium-tungsten alloys for cardiovascular stents. My work primarily focused on element ratio design, mechanical property exploration, and crystal structure analysis. I gained proficiency in operating various instruments, including grinding and polishing machines, cutting machines, fused silica vacuum tube sealers, and hardness measuring instruments. Exploring the properties of alloys provided valuable insights into the substantial impact of a material’s physical and chemical properties on product performance. Additionally, in September 2023, I engaged in an internship at the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory, where I primarily focused on designing and installing high-precision and complex motors. These experiences will equip me with the comprehensive skills necessary to excel in my master’s program.

Mechanical engineering is a rapidly evolving field that encompasses the application of scientific knowledge and engineering principles to various aspects of mechanical systems. With advancements in technology, areas such as advanced materials, energy, and biomedical engineering have gained significant importance. The Master of Science in Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (MSc(Eng)(ME)) program at the University of Hong Kong is specifically designed to provide postgraduate students with a comprehensive perspective and in-depth understanding of the current challenges in this dynamic field. By adopting an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach, this program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to address contemporary issues faced by mechanical engineers. Through engaging in cutting-edge research, students have invaluable opportunities to explore emerging technologies and contribute to the advancement of mechanical engineering at a higher level. Joining this program would not only enable me to expand my expertise but also provide a platform to contribute to the field. I am excited about the prospect of immersing myself in a stimulating academic environment, collaborating with esteemed faculty and fellow researchers, and making significant contributions to the ever-evolving world of mechanical engineering.
