Education in the Age of AI

Undoubtedly, AI has impacted education in administration, instruction, and learning. Some people have argued that education is being challenged by AI, but education has the potential to flourish with the help of AI technology.

Firstly, AI can improve education equality and inclusion. AI-powered tools can provide access to education for individuals with disabilities, such as text-to-speech software for individuals with visual impairments. Additionally, AI can help bridge the digital divide by providing access to education in remote or underprivileged areas. Under the objectives of education for sustainable development, equity promotion can be realized to ensure a better quality of life for everyone now and for generations to come.

Secondly, AI can help personalized learning to meet students’ demands. It can analyze students’ data, including their learning style, pace, and progress, to provide customized learning experiences. This approach can help students achieve better learning outcomes, as they can learn at their own pace and in a way that suits them best. Furthermore, AI can save students from repetitive tasks such as grading and feedback, allowing them to focus on more meaningful aspects of learning. For instance, AI can help students identify gaps in knowledge and provide targeted support. Meanwhile, students can use AI-powered tools to enhance their positive learning emotions, such as virtual tutors and chatbots.

Moreover, value orientation is the origin or basis of the aims of education. For teachers, they have to cultivate not just learners' skills and knowledge but also their moral concepts. In this way, schools play an essential part because they provide a place for educators to communicate with learners face-to-face. If learners, especially youths, exhibit bad behavior, teachers can correct them in proper ways. These methods may involve cultural backgrounds, regional customs, religions, etc. By contrast, learners have to work individually without supervisors in virtual classrooms such as online platforms. For children, that is not good for them to form learning habits and self-control as their behavior, whether good or not, tends to be omitted easily. Such omissions can cause moral problems now and then. What’s worse, that may betray the aims of education from the social-oriented perspective which is to develop students’ sense of national identity, unity, and patriotism and to set up students’ commitment to democracy, social justice, equality of opportunity, the welfare of a state, etc.

The second reason why AI teachers cannot replace human teachers in classroom activities is that learners, especially children, may be confused with the differences between human teachers and machine teachers. Unlike AI teachers, human teachers can help children establish relationships with people. In this process, children can develop their social awareness, including social skills and problem-solving abilities. Only when cultural knowledge, social knowledge, and life experience are selected and practiced by learners can they play a positive role in their personality development. On the opposite, if children lack this process, they tend to be excluded by society when they grow up.

Therefore, children must be educated by human teachers for well-rounded students cannot be taught by automatic teachers
