Estimating Biological Yield: Challenges and Methods in Crop Production
Estimating the biological yield of crops is crucial for understanding productivity and optimizing agricultural practices. However, it presents a unique challenge as its determination often requires destructive methods, making continuous monitoring difficult. Therefore, yield estimates are often considered constant for a specific crop or variety within a given area.
Biological yield represents the total amount of organic matter produced by a plant during its growth cycle. It is calculated as the sum of daily net photosynthesis (Pn) values from the start of the season (SOS) to harvest (n). Net photosynthesis, the difference between carbon dioxide uptake during photosynthesis and its release during respiration, is a key driver of plant growth and ultimately, yield.
