(Cheech Marin) Ed A hyena who is always laughing and making strange noises. (Jim Cummings) The Script 1. "Digga Tunnah" (The movie opens with a shot of the sun rising over the Pride Lands. The camera then pans down to a group of animals gathered around Rafiki, who is sitting on a rock.) Rafiki: (singing) Asante sana, squash banana, we we nugu, mi mi apana. Timon: (offscreen) What's he talking about? Pumbaa: (offscreen) Beats me. Rafiki: (laughing) It means you're a baboon, and I'm not. (The animals laugh, and Rafiki jumps down from the rock.) Rafiki: Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to present to you... (He gestures to Timon and Pumbaa, who are standing nearby.) Rafiki: ...Timon and Pumbaa! (The animals cheer, and Timon and Pumbaa take a bow.) Timon: Thank you, thank you! Pumbaa: Oh, it was nothing. Timon: No, really, it was nothing. (The animals begin to murmur among themselves.) Timon: Hey, what's the matter? Don't you like our act? Zazu: Act? What act? Timon: (sarcastically) You know, the one where we pretend to be the monkeys. (The animals continue to murmur, and Timon and Pumbaa exchange worried looks.) Timon: Pumbaa, I think we're losing them. Pumbaa: Oh, no! What are we gonna do? Timon: I don't know. (He looks up at Rafiki.) Timon: Hey, Rafiki, do you know any other songs? Rafiki: Hmm...let me think...ah, yes! I know a song about digging. (He begins to sing.) Rafiki: (singing) Digga tunnah, digga tunnah, tum tum, a-wimoweh... Timon: (joining in) In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight! (The animals begin to dance and sing along.) 2. Timon the Sentry (The camera pans down to a meerkat colony, where Timon is standing guard duty.) Timon: (to himself) Great. Another day, another predator to fend off. (He sees a shadow approaching and jumps into a nearby bush.) Timon: (whispering) Okay, be cool, Timon, be cool. Just follow your training. (He takes a deep breath and jumps out of the bush, striking a dramatic pose.) Timon: Who goes there? Simba: (offscreen) It's me, Simba. Timon: (surprised) Simba? What are you doing here? Simba: (walking up to Timon) I just wanted to say hi. Timon: (sarcastic) Oh, great. Just what I need, another mouth to feed. Simba: (laughing) I don't eat meerkats, Timon. Timon: (laughing nervously) Oh, right. Of course not. So, uh, what's up? Simba: (looking at the colony) I was just wondering what it's like to live here. Timon: (proudly) Well, let me tell you, Simba. Life in the colony is great. We dig tunnels, we hide from predators, we...we...we... (He trails off, realizing that he's not really making it sound very exciting.) Simba: (smiling) It sounds interesting. Timon: (skeptical) Interesting? Try backbreaking. Look, Simba, you don't want to get mixed up with a bunch of boring old meerkats like us. You want to see the world. Simba: (excited) Really? Timon: (nodding) Yeah! You want to go out there and explore, and...and...and... (He trails off again, realizing that he doesn't really have a plan.) Simba: (looking around) But how will I know where to go? Timon: (thinking) Hmm...well, you could always follow the stars. Simba: (impressed) The stars? Timon: (nodding) Yeah! They'll take you anywhere you want to go. (He points up at the sky.) Timon: See that one? That's the North Star. It's always pointing north. Simba: (looking up) Wow. Timon: (smiling) Yeah. And if you ever get lost, just remember to look beyond what you see. Simba: (grinning) Thanks, Timon. You're a good friend. Timon: (smiling) Yeah, well, don't tell anyone. It'll ruin my reputation. (Simba laughs and runs off, and Timon watches him go, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment.) 3. "Look Beyond What You See" (The camera follows Simba as he runs through the savanna, looking up at the stars.) Simba: (singing) There's more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done. There's far too much to take in here, more to find than can ever be found. But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky keeps great and small on the endless round. It's the Circle of Life, and it moves us all through despair and hope, through faith and love, till we find our place on the path unwinding in the Circle, the Circle of Life. (As the song ends, Simba reaches Pride Rock and gazes out over the kingdom.) 4. Pumbaa's Special Power (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are walking through the savanna.) Timon: (annoyed) Pumbaa, do you have to stop and smell every flower? Pumbaa: (smiling) I can't help it, Timon. They're so pretty. Timon: (rolling his eyes) Pretty? They're just plants. They don't do anything. (Suddenly, a group of hyenas appears, surrounding Timon and Pumbaa.) Shenzi: Well, well, well. Look what we have here. Banzai: It's a meal fit for a king. Ed: (laughing) I like food. (The hyenas close in, and Timon and Pumbaa back away nervously.) Pumbaa: (whispering to Timon) Timon, what are we gonna do? Timon: (thinking) Think, think, think... (He looks at Pumbaa.) Timon: Pumbaa, do you remember your special power? Pumbaa: (confused) Special power? Timon: (nodding) Yeah! The one you showed me that time when we were being chased by the lions. Pumbaa: (thinking) Oh, right. My special power. (He takes a deep breath and lets out a massive fart, which knocks the hyenas off their feet and sends them flying.) Timon: (impressed) Wow. I forgot how powerful that was. (The hyenas get back up, looking angry.) Shenzi: (growling) You're gonna pay for that. Banzai: Yeah. You're gonna pay. Ed: (laughing) Pay! (Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes the ground between Timon and Pumbaa, sending the hyenas running in terror.) Timon: (amazed) Whoa. What was that? (The camera pans up to reveal Rafiki sitting on a nearby rock.) Rafiki: (laughing) It's called a lightning strike, my friends. Timon: (sarcastic) Oh, right. I knew that. (Rafiki jumps down from the rock and walks over to them.) Rafiki: (smiling) You two are quite a pair. Timon: (proudly) Yeah, we are. (Pumbaa smiles and nods in agreement.) 5. Timon's Dream Home (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are walking through a desert.) Timon: (sighing) This place is a dump. Pumbaa: (looking around) I kind of like it. It's quiet and peaceful. Timon: (annoyed) Quiet and peaceful? That's no way to live, Pumbaa. Look at me. I'm a meerkat with dreams. I want adventure, excitement, romance. I want a life that means something. (He looks off into the distance.) Timon: I want to live...somewhere else. (He begins to sing.) Timon: (singing) In a perfect world, I'd have a perfect home, where the grass is green and the sky is blue. A cozy little place that's all my own, where I can do whatever I want to do. (As he sings, the scenery changes to show Timon's dream home, which is a lush oasis with a swimming pool, a hot tub, and a statue of himself.) Timon: (singing) I'd have a spa, and a bowling alley, and a movie room with a big TV. A giant kitchen, with a fridge so tall, it could hold a hundred pizzas easily. And outside, I'd have a patio, with a BBQ and a tiki bar. And when the moon comes up, I'd sit outside, and count the stars. (The song ends, and Timon and Pumbaa continue to walk through the desert, still dreaming of a better life.) 6. Hakuna Matata (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are walking through a jungle.) Timon: (sighing) I still can't believe we left the meerkat colony. Pumbaa: (smiling) I know. It's great, isn't it? Timon: (skeptical) Great? We're living in the middle of nowhere, with no food, no water, and no meerkats. Pumbaa: (smiling) But we have each other, Timon. And isn't that what really matters? (He begins to sing.) Pumbaa: (singing) Hakuna Matata, what a wonderful phrase. Hakuna Matata, ain't no passing craze. It means no worries for the rest of your days. It's our problem-free philosophy, Hakuna Matata. (As he sings, the scenery changes to show Timon and Pumbaa living a carefree life in the jungle, eating bugs and lounging in the sun.) Timon: (joining in) Yeah, it's our motto. Pumbaa: (grinning) What's a motto? Timon: (rolling his eyes) Nothing. What's a motto with you? (They both laugh, and the song continues.) 7. Parenthood (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are walking through the jungle.) Timon: (worried) Pumbaa, I don't know if I'm ready for this. Pumbaa: (smiling) Ready for what, Timon? Timon: (nervously) Parenthood. (He points to a group of baby animals, including a lion cub, a warthog piglet, and a meerkat pup.) Pumbaa: (surprised) Parenthood? I didn't even know you were...you know... Timon: (laughing nervously) Oh, no, no, no. Not me. These guys. (He points to the baby animals again.) Timon: They're looking up to us, Pumbaa. We have to be their role models. Pumbaa: (nodding) You're right, Timon. We have to show them the way. (He begins to sing.) Pumbaa: (singing) When I was a young warthog, my father said to me, "Son, there's a lot of things you don't know about, but you can learn from me. There's a time for being lazy, and a time for being strong. You can be a leader, if you're willing to be wrong." (As he sings, the camera shows Timon and Pumbaa teaching the baby animals how to survive in the jungle.) Timon: (joining in) Yeah, and when I was a young meerkat, my father said to me, "Son, there's a lot of things you don't know about, but you can learn from me. There's a time for running, and a time for standing tall. You can be a winner, if you're willing to risk it all." (The song ends, and Timon and Pumbaa watch proudly as the baby animals scamper off to play.) 8. The Snail-Slurping Contest (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are sitting in a clearing, slurping snails.) Timon: (belching) Ah, that hit the spot. Pumbaa: (smiling) Yeah, it was pretty good. Timon: (skeptical) Pretty good? It was amazing! I haven't tasted snails that good since...well, since ever. (Suddenly, a group of meerkats appears, led by Uncle Max.) Uncle Max: (surprised) Timon? Timon: (nervously) Uh, hi, Uncle Max. What brings you here? Uncle Max: (smiling) We're having a snail-slurping contest. You and Pumbaa should come join us. Timon: (excited) A snail-slurping contest? Count us in! (He turns to Pumbaa.) Timon: You ready for this? Pumbaa: (smiling) You bet. (The camera shows Timon and Pumbaa competing in the contest, which involves slurping snails as fast as possible.) Timon: (belching) Oh, man. I think I'm gonna be sick. Uncle Max: (laughing) Looks like we have a winner! (He hands Timon a trophy, and the other meerkats cheer.) Timon: (proudly) Thank you, thank you. I couldn't have done it without Pumbaa. (He turns to Pumbaa.) Timon: You were a great teammate. Pumbaa: (smiling) Thanks, Timon. (Suddenly, a group of hyenas appears, led by Shenzi.) Shenzi: (laughing) Well, well, well. Look who we have here. Banzai: (smiling) It's Timon and Pumbaa. Ed: (laughing) Timon and Pumbaa. (The hyenas begin to advance on them, and Timon and Pumbaa back away nervously.) Timon: (whispering to Pumbaa) What do we do? Pumbaa: (whispering back) I don't know. Timon: (thinking) Wait a minute. I have an idea. (He turns to the hyenas.) Timon: Hey, guys. You want to hear a joke? Shenzi: (skeptical) A joke? Timon: (nodding) Yeah, a joke. It'll be funny, I promise. Banzai: (smiling) Okay, let's hear it. Timon: (clearing his throat) Why did the hyena cross the road? Shenzi: (suspicious) I don't know. Why? Timon: (grinning) To get to the stupid meerkat. (He and Pumbaa run off, and the hyenas chase after them, laughing.) 9. Trouble in Paradise (The camera cuts to Timon and Pumbaa, who are lounging in a hot tub.)
