English Lanyan Sutra Lanyan Sutra Chapter 6Chapter 6Avalokitesvaras Dharma-Gate -- Enlightened through the gateway of ear Then AvalokitesvaraContemplator of the Worlds Sounds Bodhisattva arose from hi
iving beings, extending even to the smallest insects and creatures." "Bhagavan, this is the path I took to attain enlightenment. The Buddha of that time, Contemplator of the World's Sounds, praised me, saying that I had attained the Dharma-Gate of hearing and reflecting, and had become a Bodhisattva who could benefit all beings." The Buddha said to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva: "Excellent, excellent, Avalokitesvara! You have skillfully described the Dharma-Gate of hearing and reflecting. This is a profound and subtle approach to enlightenment, difficult to understand and difficult to practice." "Avalokitesvara, do you see all the living beings in the six paths?" Avalokitesvara replied: "Yes, Bhagavan, I see them." The Buddha said: "Avalokitesvara, if you wish to benefit all living beings, you should first cultivate the Dharma-Gate of hearing and reflecting. If you can do that, then you will be able to enter deeply into the minds of all living beings, and understand their joys and sorrows, their desires and fears." "Once you have understood their minds, then you can use your skillful means to teach and guide them. This is the true way to benefit living beings." "Avalokitesvara, if you wish to cultivate the Dharma-Gate of hearing and reflecting, you should first purify your mind and body. You should abandon all worldly attachments and distractions, and cultivate virtue, concentration, and wisdom." "Then, you should listen to the true Dharma, with a pure and open mind. You should reflect deeply on what you have heard, and meditate on it until you attain a deep understanding. In this way, you will enter the Dharma-Gate of hearing and reflecting, and become a Bodhisattva who can benefit all living beings."
