Conan OBriens Dartmouth College 2011 Graduation Speech in EnglishIve been living in Los Angeles for two years and Ive never been this cold in my life I will pay anyone here $300 for GORE-TEX gloves An
am honored to be here today because when I graduated from college in 1985, my commencement speaker was President Ronald Reagan. His speech was entitled "Remarks at a Graduation Ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York." That's right. The Gipper spoke at a military academy. And he did not sugarcoat things. He told the cadets that life is full of tough choices and that they would have to make sacrifices. He said that they would have to put the needs of others before their own desires, and that they would have to be willing to fight for what they believed in. He also told them that they would have to accept the consequences of their actions and that they would have to be responsible for their own lives.
Well, I'm here to tell you that President Reagan was wrong. Life is not full of tough choices. It is full of easy choices. Do you want to wear flip-flops to your job interview? That's an easy choice. Do you want to eat ramen noodles for every meal? That's an easy choice. Do you want to move to Los Angeles and become a talk show host? That's an easy choice. And let me tell you, it is a choice that has brought me nothing but joy and happiness for the past 20 years.
But seriously, I do have some advice for you today. My first piece of advice is to always be yourself, unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman. My second piece of advice is to find something you love to do and then do it for the rest of your life. For me, it's telling jokes to strangers on television. For you, it might be something else. But whatever it is, find it and do it with all your heart.
My final piece of advice is this: don't be afraid to fail. In fact, I encourage you to fail. Failure is where you learn the most about yourself and about life. Failure is where you find out what you're made of. Failure is where you find out what you really want. And failure is where you find out who your true friends are. So embrace failure, learn from it, and use it to make yourself a better person.
In closing, let me say this: you are the future of this country. You are the ones who will make it great. You are the ones who will solve the problems that we cannot. You are the ones who will change the world. So go out there and do it. Congratulations, Dartmouth Class of 2011. And if anyone has those GORE-TEX gloves, please see me after the ceremony. Thank you
