Abstract:
Mushrooms have been used as traditional medicine for centuries, and recent studies have shown that mushroom polysaccharides possess antimicrobial activity. This review aims to summarize the current research on the antimicrobial activity of mushroom polysaccharides. Introduction:
Mushrooms are a diverse group of fungi that have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Recent studies have shown that polysaccharides extracted from mushrooms possess antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial agents are substances that can kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance has led to a renewed interest in natural antimicrobial agents, and mushroom polysaccharides have emerged as a potential source of such agents. This review aims to summarize the current research on the antimicrobial activity of mushroom polysaccharides.
Methods:
A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Web of Science databases using the keywords "mushrooms," "polysaccharides," and "antimicrobial." The search was limited to articles published in English between 2000 and 2021. Only studies that reported the antimicrobial activity of mushroom polysaccharides were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.
Results:
A total of 78 articles were identified, of which 34 met the inclusion criteria. The studies were conducted using a variety of methods, including disk diffusion, broth microdilution, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays. The results showed that mushroom polysaccharides have antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The most commonly studied mushrooms were Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes, and Pleurotus ostreatus. The mechanisms of action of the polysaccharides varied depending on the microorganism, but included disruption of cell membranes, inhibition of enzymes, and modulation of the immune system.
Discussion:
The findings of this review suggest that mushroom polysaccharides have the potential to be developed into natural antimicrobial agents. The studies included in this review showed that the polysaccharides have broad-spectrum activity against a range of microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant strains. However, the studies varied in terms of their quality and the methods used, which makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions. Further research is needed to determine the optimal extraction methods, purification techniques, and dosage regimens for the polysaccharides. In addition, the safety and efficacy of the polysaccharides in human trials need to be evaluated.
