Title: I Am Monkey

Grade level: Kindergarten

Objective: To introduce students to the concept of monkeys, their characteristics, and behavior.

Materials:

• Pictures of monkeys
• Monkey plush toy or puppet
• Book about monkeys
• Chart paper and markers
• Monkey coloring sheet
• Playdough
• Banana slices

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):

• Begin by asking students if they have ever seen a monkey before. Show them pictures of monkeys and ask them to describe what they see.
• Introduce the monkey plush toy or puppet and ask students if they can identify it as a monkey.
• Explain that monkeys are animals that live in the jungle and that they have some unique characteristics that make them different from other animals.

2. Read Aloud (15 minutes):

• Read a book about monkeys to the class, such as "Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina or "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" by Eileen Christelow.
• As you read, stop to ask students questions about the story and the behavior of the monkeys.

3. Charting (10 minutes):

• On chart paper, make a list of characteristics of monkeys that the students identified from the pictures and the book.
• Ask students to contribute additional facts or observations they have about monkeys.

4. Playdough Activity (15 minutes):

• Give each student a small ball of playdough.
• Ask them to use the playdough to create their own monkey, using the characteristics they learned from the chart as a guide.
• As they work, encourage students to talk about what they are making and what features they are including.

5. Snack Time (10 minutes):

• Serve banana slices and talk about how monkeys love to eat bananas.
• Ask students if they have ever eaten a banana before and what they think it tastes like.

6. Coloring Activity (10 minutes):

• Give each student a monkey coloring sheet and crayons.
• Encourage them to color their monkey with as many colors as they want and to be creative with their designs.

7. Closure (5 minutes):

• Ask students to share what they learned about monkeys today.
• Remind them that they can continue learning about monkeys on their own, by reading books or watching videos.

Assessment:

• Observation of student participation in the activities
• Review of the chart paper and playdough creations to ensure that students included characteristics of monkeys in their creations
