Ruptured Carotid Plaque: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Case Study
Ruptured Carotid Plaque: A Case Study
This case study describes the diagnosis and successful treatment of a patient with a ruptured vulnerable plaque in the right carotid artery.
Diagnosis:
The initial diagnosis was made using contrast-enhanced ultrasound, which revealed:
- A ruptured vulnerable plaque with ulcer formation in the right carotid artery.* A free-floating thrombus formation.* Moderate stenosis at the beginning of the right internal carotid artery.
These findings were further corroborated by digital subtraction angiography (DSA), computed tomography angiography (CTA), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Additionally, the patient's MRI revealed acute lacunar infarction in the right caput nuclei caudate, establishing a link between the cerebrovascular event and the plaque rupture and thrombus formation.
Treatment:
The patient underwent a successful stent placement and balloon angioplasty procedure performed by a neurologist. To minimize the risk of complications, a protective umbrella was deployed in the distal end of the free-floating thrombus in the carotid artery.
Outcome:
The patient recovered well from the procedure. No new neurological symptoms were observed post-surgery, and the patient was discharged with an improved condition.
Key Takeaways:
- This case highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment of carotid artery disease.* Contrast-enhanced ultrasound is a valuable tool for identifying vulnerable plaques.* Timely intervention with stent placement and other therapies can effectively address carotid artery blockages and prevent further complications.* The use of protective devices, such as an umbrella, can mitigate risks during procedures.
