Cargo Hold Bilge Well Fuel Spill Cleanup and Remediation
During the cleaning and repair period of a cargo hold, a fuel spill was discovered in the bilge well. Regular communication was maintained with the workers and crew members throughout the remediation process, providing guidance and suggestions for effective cleaning procedures.
Upon discovering the fuel in the bilge well, the workers were advised to prioritize fuel removal. Following this, a thorough cleaning of the pipelines was initiated using a mixture of oil dispersant. The contaminated dispersant was continuously replaced until no visible traces of oil remained within the pipelines. A final rinse with clean water was then performed. All contaminated water generated during the cleaning process was carefully collected and transported ashore for appropriate disposal.
An inspection was conducted on July 27th to assess the progress of the cleanup. The inspection revealed that the bilge well had been effectively cleaned with no obvious signs of fuel remaining. The crew had also proactively inspected the internal filters within the pipelines and confirmed they were free from contamination. A small amount of oil residue was observed in the vicinity of the hatch, and workers addressed this using a mobile platform. All cleaning work was successfully concluded by 0800 on July 28th.
