Bilge Well Fuel Spill Clean-up and Remediation

During the vessel's cleaning and repair period, we maintained regular telephone contact with the onboard crew and shore-based workers, providing guidance and suggestions for effective cleaning procedures. We were informed that while the cargo tank top had been cleaned, upon opening the bilge well cover, a significant quantity of fuel was discovered.

We immediately advised the workers to prioritize the removal of the fuel from the bilge well. Subsequently, we recommended a thorough cleaning of the affected pipes using a suitable oil dispersant. This process involved continuously soaking the pipes with fresh dispersant solution, ensuring the complete removal of all oil traces. The pipes were then rinsed with clean water, and all oily water was carefully collected and transported ashore for appropriate treatment and disposal.

A boarding inspection was conducted on July 27th to assess the progress and effectiveness of the cleaning efforts. The inspection revealed a clean bilge well, free from any visible oil traces. The crew also inspected the internal filters within the pipes, confirming the absence of any contamination. However, some minor oil stains were observed on the hatch coaming surrounding the bilge well. Workers promptly addressed these remaining stains using a mobile platform to facilitate access and ensure thorough cleaning.

The cleaning operation was successfully completed at 0800 on July 28th, with all areas deemed clean and free from oil contamination. This incident highlights the importance of proactive communication, diligent cleaning practices, and thorough inspections in maintaining a safe and environmentally responsible maritime operation.
