Ship Hull and Deck Cleaning Procedures Followed by Rainwater Contamination Response
Due to concerns about potential rain, the terminal was requested to clean the ship's hull and deck. Workers first removed visible oil stains with shovels. Heavy oil stains were then wiped with diesel and finally treated with an oil remover. This cleaning process was completed for both the deck and hull. Following this, the workers moved on to cleaning the cargo hold. Their focus was on collecting visible oil in the aft area to prevent it from reaching the bilge. These cleaning activities continued until approximately 0230hrs on July 21.
On the morning of July 21, some remaining oil stains were observed on the hull and deck. Rain began falling around 0850hrs, and the accumulating rainwater on the deck exhibited a noticeable oil sheen. To prevent this contaminated rainwater from entering the sea, the crew took immediate action. They collected the polluted rainwater in empty buckets and contacted the terminal for its removal. The terminal then transported the collected rainwater for proper onshore treatment.
