Astragalus Root Improves Growth Performance, Antioxidant Capacity, and Immune Function in Hu Sheep
The apparent digestibility rates of dry matter, acid detergent fiber, and crude protein in Astragalus root were higher than those in alfalfa oat hay, indicating that Astragalus root is more easily absorbed by Hu sheep. In addition, condensed tannins in Astragalus root enhance antioxidant and immune capacities in Hu sheep by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the concentration of immune factors. The study also found that condensed tannins in Astragalus root reduce the activity of proteolytic and fibrolytic bacteria in the rumen, thereby decreasing ruminal fermentation. However, condensed tannins inhibit the activity of methanogenic bacteria, reducing methane production and improving energy utilization efficiency, thus ensuring the healthy growth of Hu sheep. Overall, this study suggests that Astragalus root plays a role in improving growth performance, enhancing antioxidant capacity, and immune ability in Hu sheep, but further research is needed to determine the precise concentration for its use.
