Government Initiatives Reduce Financial Burden of Severe Mental Illness Treatment in China

Faced with the high cost of treating severe mental illnesses, the Chinese government has actively adopted various measures to reduce medical expenses for patients and provide financial assistance to those in need. In 2009, the 'New Healthcare Reform' marked a significant step by integrating the management of severe mental illnesses into basic public health service projects and increasing investment in psychiatric hospitals.

Provincial governments have also implemented special policies and support measures for patients with severe mental illnesses. These include expanding the scope and proportion of reimbursement for severe mental illnesses under medical insurance schemes.

These combined efforts have yielded positive results. The fifth national health service survey revealed that, compared to 2008, the proportion of patients with severe mental illnesses who should have been hospitalized but were not decreased by 8%. Notably, the proportion of those who did not seek hospitalization due to financial constraints decreased by 27%.
