Lack of Familiarity with Gas Bottle Procedures Contributes to Accident
A recent maritime accident has brought to light the critical importance of proper gas bottle maintenance and usage procedures. The vessel's Master, having joined only one month prior, possessed limited knowledge of these crucial protocols. It is understood that the acetylene bottle had been depleted before the incident occurred. The oxygen bottle, however, had been utilized by a shore-based repair team as recently as August 29th while the vessel was undergoing repairs. Following its use, the oxygen bottle was returned to its designated storage cage located aft of the engine room. This incident underscores the need for comprehensive onboarding procedures that familiarize new Masters with all safety protocols, particularly those involving potentially hazardous materials like gas bottles.
