Predicting Statin Prescription: Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior to Physician Intentions
This study, published in BMC Health Services Research (Li et al., 2017), investigated the utility of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in predicting physicians' intentions to prescribe statins. Statins are a class of medications commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Methods: Researchers surveyed 260 physicians in China using a structured questionnaire. The survey assessed the physicians' attitudes towards prescribing statins, subjective norms (perceived social pressure to prescribe), perceived behavioral control (belief in their ability to prescribe effectively), and their actual intentions to prescribe statins. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling.
Results: The study found that all three TPB components – attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control – significantly predicted physicians' intentions to prescribe statins. Physicians with positive attitudes towards statin prescription, those who perceived greater social pressure to prescribe statins, and those who felt confident in their ability to prescribe statins were more likely to report an intention to prescribe.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that the TPB provides a valuable framework for understanding and predicting physician prescribing behavior, particularly concerning statins. These insights could be instrumental in developing interventions aimed at:
- Promoting the appropriate use of statins* Improving medication adherence among patients* Supporting physicians in making informed prescribing decisions related to heart disease prevention and treatment
By understanding the factors influencing physician behavior, healthcare providers and policymakers can better target interventions to improve patient outcomes and promote cardiovascular health.
