China's new smoking ban comes into effect on Sunday, however, it is expected to have a limited impact due to the country's deeply entrenched smoking culture and lack of awareness of the health risks associated with smoking. China has over 300 million smokers, the world's largest number, and it is estimated that 3,000 people die every day from smoking-related illnesses. The ban was mandated by the State Council in response to a World Health Organization treaty signed in 2006, however, China has missed the deadline by five months, and public health experts doubt that the ban will be immediately effective
