Introduction
The physical activity of children and adolescents has a significant impact on their physical health and well-being. With the rise of technology and sedentary lifestyles, it is essential to assess the effects of physical activity on the development and maintenance of a healthy body. This paper aims to review the literature on the impact of physical activity on the physical health of children and adolescents.
Effects of Physical Activity on Physical Health
Physical activity has been found to have a positive impact on the physical health of children and adolescents. A study by Yang et al. (2020) found that physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of developing obesity in children and adolescents. Furthermore, physical activity has been found to improve cardiovascular health, bone density, and muscular strength (Bassett et al., 2015; Guan et al., 2018).
In addition, physical activity has been found to have a positive impact on mental health. A study by Chen et al. (2019) found that physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of depression and anxiety in adolescents. The study also found that physical activity was associated with improved self-esteem and academic performance.
Barriers to Physical Activity
Despite the clear benefits of physical activity, many children and adolescents do not engage in enough physical activity. A study by Wang et al. (2021) found that high school students in China spent an average of 5.1 hours per day on sedentary activities. The study also found that lack of time, motivation, and access to facilities were the main barriers to engaging in physical activity.
Interventions to Promote Physical Activity
Interventions to promote physical activity have been found to be effective in increasing physical activity levels among children and adolescents. A study by Wang et al. (2020) found that a school-based physical activity intervention increased physical activity levels among Chinese elementary school students. The intervention included increasing the amount of physical education classes, providing after-school sports programs, and promoting active transportation to and from school.
Conclusion
Physical activity has a positive impact on the physical and mental health of children and adolescents. However, many children and adolescents do not engage in enough physical activity due to barriers such as lack of time, motivation, and access to facilities. Interventions to promote physical activity have been found to be effective in increasing physical activity levels among children and adolescents.
