Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my deep interest in the exchange student program at the University of California, Berkeley. As a freshman at Nankai University pursuing a degree in intelligent science and technology, I am eager to further my academic and professional goals by exploring new academic challenges and opportunities in a more diverse and challenging academic environment.

My passion for intelligent science and technology started at an early age, inspired by my father, who majored in computer science and worked for an Internet company. I taught myself to program in C++ and chose to major in artificial intelligence for in-depth study in college. In addition, I have a strong interest in psychology, which led me to read several popular science books and take elective courses in college mental health, psychological stress reduction, and self-adjustment.

Last semester, I took a class called Survey of Automation and Intelligent Science from Professor Jingtai Liu, who spent a year of academic exchange in the lab of Professor Ken Goldberg, a renowned robotics scholar at UC Berkeley in 2006. Professor Liu often tells us about his learning experience at Berkeley and encourages us to go to Berkeley for exchange study to broaden our international perspective and understand cutting-edge technology.

I am confident that attending UC Berkeley will offer me an even more challenging academic environment that will push me to excel and reach my full potential. I have a strong academic record and have consistently challenged myself to take on rigorous coursework. Berkeley's liberal approach to course selection was very appealing to me, and I would like to take courses such as COMPSCI 70 001 - LEC 001-Discrete Mathematics and Probability Theory, COMPSCI 61A-The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, COMPSCI 61B-Data Structures, COMPSCI 61C-Great Ideas of Computer Architecture (Machine Structures), and PSYCH C120-Basic Issues in Cognition.

Furthermore, I have strong executive and time management skills, which were demonstrated when I came up with the idea of creating a mental health website last semester. I formed a team, completed a campus-wide survey of mental health conditions, and built the initial website in just half a semester. I think these qualities will help me thrive during my exchange at Berkeley.

I am also adaptable to new environments, as demonstrated by my ability to fully adapt to the pace of university life within two weeks of starting school in a strange city far from home. I am confident that I will be able to adapt to the environment and engage in a full and interesting campus life soon after I go to Berkeley.

Finally, Berkeley has many student organizations and student activities that appeal to me, such as the Berkeley Jazz Ensemble, hiking and camping trips, and the opportunity to visit companies in Silicon Valley for a site visit. These experiences will broaden my horizons and help me develop valuable skills and connections for my future career.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that the exchange student program at the University of California, Berkeley would be an excellent opportunity for me to further my academic and professional goals. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Haoran Wan
