COVID-19 Severe Case Death Rates Higher Among Children

A new study published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics has found that the death rate for children with severe cases of COVID-19 is higher than previously reported.

The study analyzed data from 46 pediatric hospitals in the United States between March and November 2020. Of the 48,000 children who were hospitalized during that time period, 4,404 tested positive for COVID-19.

Of those 4,404 children, 359 were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 99 required mechanical ventilation. Of the 359 children who were admitted to the ICU, 25 died, resulting in a death rate of 7%.

The study also found that children with underlying medical conditions such as obesity, neurological disorders, and chronic lung disease were more likely to require ICU admission and mechanical ventilation.

The findings of this study suggest that the COVID-19 death rate for children with severe cases is higher than previously reported. It is important for parents and healthcare providers to take precautions to protect children from COVID-19, especially those with underlying medical conditions.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it is crucial to continue to monitor and understand the effects of the virus on children and to take steps to protect them from severe illness and death
