Hello everyone,
Today, I would like to share with you a traditional Chinese festival called Dragon Boat Festival, which is also known as the Duanwu Festival.
The festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which usually falls in late May or early June. It's a time for families to get together, eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and watch dragon boat races.
The legend behind the festival is about a poet and statesman named Qu Yuan, who lived over 2,000 years ago during China's Warring States period. Qu Yuan was a loyal patriot who wanted to save his kingdom, but his advice was ignored by the king. When the kingdom was eventually conquered, Qu Yuan was so heartbroken that he drowned himself in the Miluo River.
The locals who admired Qu Yuan were devastated by his death and raced to the river in their boats to retrieve his body. They threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from eating his body and beat drums to scare away evil spirits. This marked the beginning of the dragon boat race tradition.
Today, dragon boat races are still held all over China and other parts of the world. Teams of paddlers race in long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. The atmosphere is filled with excitement and cheers as the boats race to the finish line.
In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is a time-honored tradition that celebrates Chinese culture and history. It's a time for families and friends to come together and enjoy each other's company while watching the thrilling dragon boat races. Thank you for listening
