Elevator Escape Hatches: Fact vs. Fiction

Elevator escape hatches are often portrayed in movies and television as a way to escape from a trapped elevator car. However, these internal hatches are a thing of fiction. Modern elevators do not have escape hatches that can be accessed from inside the car. They are only accessible from outside the elevator car by trained professionals. This is because the space above the elevator car is a critical part of the hoistway and contains vital mechanical components. So, while it may make for exciting movie scenes, the idea of escaping an elevator through an internal hatch is not a real-world possibility.
