The Tang Dynasty: A Golden Age of Chinese Civilization

The Tang Dynasty, regarded by some historians as the most splendid period of Chinese civilization, had its capital in Chang'an. Through exchanges with India and the Middle East, facilitated by the Tang Dynasty, significant progress was made in the fields of literature and art. The Tang Dynasty was a golden age, where outstanding Confucian scholars were selected nationwide through the imperial examination system to serve the government. With the support of Confucian scholars, the government system of the Tang Dynasty also became increasingly perfected. By the mid-8th century, the power of the Tang Dynasty began to decline.
