This study examined the academic self-efficacy and learning engagement of high school students in online English learning. The results showed that the mean value of their online English academic self-efficacy was at an intermediate level, with higher scores in learning ability self-efficacy than learning behavior self-efficacy. The mean value of their online English learning engagement was also at an intermediate level, with behavioral engagement scoring the highest and social engagement scoring the lowest.

To improve students' academic self-efficacy, teachers should focus on enhancing their learning behavior self-efficacy, such as providing them with effective study strategies and feedback. To enhance students' learning engagement, teachers should create a supportive and interactive learning environment that promotes not only behavioral engagement but also emotional, cognitive, and social engagement.

Overall, this study sheds light on the importance of academic self-efficacy and learning engagement in online English learning and provides implications for educators to improve the quality of online learning experiences for high school students.
