Water resources are an essential resource for sustaining the survival of living organisms and promoting the sustainable development of society. Water resources can include blue water and green water. Blue water refers to surface and groundwater stored in rivers, lakes, aquifers, and reservoirs that can be extracted for human use. Green water refers to the non-runoff portion of precipitation, which is temporarily stored in soil and eventually returns to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Climate change has intensified the spatiotemporal variability of land-atmosphere interactions, while human activities have altered the hydrological cycle and energy balance processes by changing the underlying surface cover, exacerbating the uneven spatial distribution of water and thermal resources in the basin, and causing significant changes in the distribution of blue and green water throughout the year. The Dongjiang River Basin is an important water source for the core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, including Huizhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. Analyzing the response of blue and green water resources in the Dongjiang River Basin to climate and land use change is of great significance. Therefore, this paper comprehensively analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of blue and green water resources in the Dongjiang River Basin under the background of climate and land cover change by constructing a SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) model applicable to the Dongjiang River Basin research area. Combined with the shortage of blue and green water and the per capita available water resources, the water security of the basin is evaluated, and the response mechanisms of blue and green water changes and precipitation-blue and green water distribution to climate, land use, and vegetation component changes are discussed. The impact of climate change and land use on blue and green water is quantitatively evaluated, and future predictions of land use, climate, and blue and green water changes in the basin are made. The main research results obtained are as follows:
