Dr Samuel Mudd
Dr. Samuel Mudd was a physician from Maryland who was convicted of aiding and conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Mudd set Booth's broken leg after he escaped from Ford's Theatre and claimed he did not recognize Booth at the time. However, evidence suggested that Mudd had met with Booth before and had knowledge of the assassination plot. Mudd was sentenced to life in prison and sent to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. He was later pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869 after he assisted with a yellow fever outbreak at the prison. Mudd's involvement in the assassination remains controversial and is still debated by historians.
