Boston Corbett
Boston Corbett (1832-1894) was a Union soldier during the American Civil War who is best known for his role in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Corbett was a member of the 16th New York Cavalry and was present at Booth's capture after he had fled the scene of Lincoln's assassination. Corbett was chosen to pursue Booth into a tobacco barn where he ultimately shot the assassin.
Corbett was an eccentric and religious man who believed that he was on a mission from God to punish Booth for his role in the assassination. After the war, Corbett struggled with mental illness and was committed to mental hospitals several times. He also became involved in various religious movements and was known for his public preaching and displays of religious fervor. Corbett died in 1894 after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound while working as a hatter in Kansas.
