Melanin pigments have emerged as a promising material with potential applications in various fields owing to their optical, electronic, and radiation-protection properties. The formation of melanin occurs through templated pre-organization and enzymatic oxidative polymerization of specific amino acids, with the substrates dictating its properties. However, despite its potential, the fluorescence of melanin is not suitable for conventional spectroscopy due to its extremely weak signal, which makes it challenging to use for fluorescence detection and tracking.
In 2021, Ayala Lampel et al. developed a polymeric peptide pigment based on melanin formation named melanin-like particles. This new approach allows for the spontaneous formation of different chromophores, including yellow, red, and brown melanin-like particles, by oxidizing the tripeptide Lys-Tyr-Phe (KYF) with cysteine (Cys), phenylalanine (Phe), and isoleucine (Lle), respectively. In particular, (KYF/Phe)ox ((K/P)ox) has garnered significant interest due to its exceptional fluorescence emission intensity.
Overall, this new approach to generating melanin-like particles presents exciting opportunities for improving the detection and tracking of fluorescence signals in various applications.
