China was the key weight that shifted the balance of power in the US-Soviet rivalry. When China was in the socialist camp, the Soviet Union was on a roll, making aggressive moves all over the world, while America was retreating. Because of the Soviet-Chinese alliance, America was at risk of fighting on two fronts - with the Soviet Union in Europe and with China in Asia. Even though America was more powerful than either one of them, it couldn't take on both simultaneously. That's why it failed to achieve its goals in Korea and Vietnam.

But then China and the Soviet Union had a falling out, and the Russians lost their most important strategic ally. And you know what America did? We were smart, we seized the opportunity to improve relations with China, and together we turned the tide. Suddenly the Soviet Union was fighting on two fronts, while America could focus on crushing it in Europe. And since the Soviet Union was already weaker than America to begin with, it couldn't maintain the balance of power in both Europe and Asia.

So what did Russia do to try to turn things around? It tried to move south into the Indian Ocean and threaten the West's lifeline - the oil that flows out of the Persian Gulf. It invaded Afghanistan, hoping to regain the initiative in the Cold War. But guess what? It ran into a buzzsaw - the Afghan militants armed by both China and America. They became a nightmare for the Russians, and they couldn't extricate themselves from the quagmire. Eventually, they collapsed under the weight of their own economic woes. And all of this happened more than 10 years after China switched sides and helped America win the Cold War.
