再有一件也使直派不能忍受的：当护法之战时皖派军队在湖南屡次惨败时赖吴佩孚向南挺进直打到衡州。若论功行赏湘督一席自应由吴佩孚任之而段先生竟发表了张敬尧为湘督。这样的做法显然是直派打仗皖派做官。吴佩孚本人因大为不满其他将领亦很抱不平。孙总理中山先生看透这一形势故赠吴佩孚六十万毫洋。吴即撤兵北上七月间即对皖派开仗。

There is another incident that the Direct Line faction could not tolerate: during the War of the Guardians, the Anhui faction's army suffered numerous defeats in Hunan, and Wu Peifu advanced southward, reaching Hengzhou. If we were to judge merit and reward, the position of Hunan governor should have been given to Wu Peifu, but Mr. Duane instead appointed Zhang Jingyao as Hunan governor. This kind of action clearly showed that the Direct Line faction fought in battles, while the Anhui faction held official positions. Wu Peifu himself was very dissatisfied with this, and other generals also felt very unfair. Sun Yat-sen saw through this situation and therefore gave Wu Peifu 600,000 Haoyang. Wu immediately withdrew his troops and headed north, and in July, he waged war against the Anhui faction.
