Columbia University Graduate's Inspirational Journey from Refugee to Ivy League
On May 13, 2012, Filpaj, a native from Yugoslavia, got a bachelor's degree from Columbia University. When his hometown became a killing field in 1992 with civil war, Filpaj fled to New York and worked as a janitor in Columbia University. He overcame all the difficulties he encountered on his way to be the Ivy League graduate. The hardworking student and worker would go to the class in the morning and work a 2:30-11 p.m. shift before heading home to study. When talking about his hardship, he was not filled with the slightest regret or self-pity, and he even cheerfully described bonding moments with surprised younger students. His ultimate goal is to get a master's degree, even a PhD. He hopes to become a teacher.
