The experiment involved using 10 gram spherical 93W alloy projectiles and 6252 arm steel with a thickness of 25mm as the target. The chemical compositions in weight percentages were provided in table 2. Three 150 × 150 × 25mm thick steel plates were used as a semi-infinite target and were heat-treated at 200◦C for 1 hour, followed by quenching into water before the impact experiment. After heat treatment, the Armor Steel targets had equiaxed grains with diameters ranging from 200 to 400 μm, and the martensite phase was the only phase present.
The impact experiment was conducted using a two-stage gas gun with a 10.28 mm 93W alloy ball with a speed of 1km/s~2.5km/s. The specimens were sectioned along the longitudinal direction, polished, and etched with 3g nitric acid + 97 ml C2H5OH. The specimens were then examined using an OLYPUS PME3 optical microscope (OM) and a Zess-supro55 scanning electron microscope (SEM). A 3mm diameter circle was cut at the bottom of the crater, and it was mechanically thinned to 50 microns. The final thinning was performed using an electrolytic double jet polishing in a solution containing 1% HClO4 alcoholic solution. TEM observation was carried out with an FM 20 microscope operated at 120 kV.
