Winter wheat cultivation is faced with the dual challenge of water conservation and adapting to the increasing effects of climate change. The impact of climate variability on global wheat yield has been well documented, with studies indicating that more than 60% of yield variability in major breadbasket regions can be attributed to climate variability (Ray et al., 2015). However, regions with high yield variability, such as those in Australia and the Great Plains states of the United States, play a crucial role in global wheat production (A et al., 2013). The negative impact of climate change on global wheat production cannot be ignored, as previous studies have suggested that it could potentially reduce production by 30% by mid-century (Ray et al., 2012). Simulation studies on wheat yields in Australia have shown that a 2 ℃ warmer temperature than average resulted in a 50% yield reduction (Ritchie et al., 1991). Similarly, temperature variations have been identified as a critical factor affecting wheat yields in India, with sudden temperature rises resulting in forced ripening and yield loss (Gupta et al., 2010). In addition, dry and hot winds during the filling period have been reported to cause rapid senescence and death of winter wheat, resulting in lower filling rates (Wang et al., 2018). Studies conducted in the North China Plain have also indicated that minimal irrigation leads to significant yield fluctuations (Gao et al., 2022). Given the importance of winter wheat breadbaskets worldwide, it is essential to conduct more field trial observations on how diverse water management combined with weather conditions affect yield variation in winter wheat. This paper seeks to contribute to this research gap by exploring the effects of different water management strategies on winter wheat yield variability under varying weather conditions.
