Energy storage and the utilization of readily available resources without contributing to carbon emissions are significant global challenges. To address these challenges, the development of affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy storage and production systems is crucial in meeting the increasing energy demands of society. In recent years, liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems have gained prominence as an alternative to traditional storage methods. LOHC-based hydrogen storage and transport operate through two-step cycles: hydrogen loading/storage through catalytic hydrogenation of H2-lean compounds, and hydrogen unloading/release through dehydrogenation of resulting H2-rich liquids. This paper will focus on the production and storage of hydrogen, as well as their roles in the hydrogen economy.
